What DIY project have you been wanting to do or have been considering doing for a while now? What is stopping you? Not knowing where to start? Fear of messing up? Fear of it not turning out the way you had hoped?

I chose adventure to paint to my son’s mountain mural and I am so glad I did!

We moved into our house almost a year-and-a-half ago. During the building process, I searched for paint colors and room ideas for my son’s room on Pinterest (my #1 search tool for home ideas) and came across this picture. I instantly fell in love with the mountain mural and knew I wanted this in my son’s outdoor adventure room.

When ordering paint for our new house, I made sure to select and order the colors I would use for this mountain mural. I used the following Behr paint colors from Home Depot.

Room Wall Color – Subtle Touch

White Snow Peaks – Ultra Pure White

Mountains – Pewter Mug

Hills – Evening Hush

Before you start, make sure you know what you want your mountains and hills to look like on the wall. You can either copy a design you see online or design your own. I used the picture I found on Pinterest as my guide but changed it a little bit.

Do what you want and have fun with it!

Paint the snow peaks first. This way you start with the lightest color in case you make a mistake and you paint top to bottom in case of drips.

Knowing you will paint the peaks first, tape accordingly. The straight lines of the mountains and the use of painter’s tape make this part of the process pretty easy. It’s more time consuming than anything else.

Now it’s time to paint the peaks.

When you are done painting, remove the tape soon after and before the paint completely dries. Only remove the tape around the recently painted peaks. Leave the tape outlining the mountain slopes for the next step.

Wait for the paint to dry before moving on to next step.

After the snow peaks dry, tape the bottom of the peaks so the mountain paint color goes right up to the white snow peaks. Since the peaks are a lighter color than the mountains, make sure the tape is either perfectly lined up or leaves a little bit of the white showing to paint over it with the darker color if needed.

If you haven’t already, tape the side wall corners. Now you are ready to paint the mountains.

Use a roller to paint this section and a Paint Edger for the corners. Knowing the hills are coming next, make a quick outline where you want the hills to be, as seen in the above picture. Don’t paint further than necessary.

When you are done painting, remove the tape soon after and before the paint completely dries.

Wait for the paint to dry before moving on to the next step.

After the mountains dry, tape the corners if you previously removed the tape or didn’t tape all the way to the floor, and tape the floor trim. The top of the hills will be painted freehand so I put these short pieces of tape on the wall to make sure I stayed in the desired area.

Roll the bottom section and use a Paint Edger along the corners and floor trim. Roll as close as you can to where you want the top of the hills to be. Finish the top of the hills using a brush moving slowly and carefully along the top for a smooth and rounded finish.

Make sure you have a good brush, like the Shur-Line Premium Paint Brush.
